Publicly Available Information
Relocated from Vegas to Denver roughly a year ago, Refraction is already known as a troublemaker and difficult to deal with. His presence often considered as overbearing and annoying, still his heart does seem to be on the right place, always on the go to seek out trouble or help anyone who may need it.
A mover/master mostly known to transform into golden beams of light, only to then re-materialize into a equally bright and golden hard-light version of himself.
Besides his light-themed mover ability his master power seems much more prominent and problematic. Capable to split into multiple copies of himself, each more unhinged than his original unified self.
The public often divided on what to expect from the ward, his big mouth and notably online presence not really making it easier.
Often contradicting himself trough his own duplicates, spewing out nonsense and constantly fooling around. Still Refraction loves to interact with the people, to answer questions, no matter how dumb they are and to always be available.... to help with whatever.
PRT / Government Information
Costume Appearance
Breaker form is distinct enough that he doesn’t feel the need for a special costume. His whole body giving off a golden shimmer, hair pulled upwards, bright eyes and translucent skin.
He would seem increasingly less ‘human’ the more he splits, with each copy getting brighter and more translucent depending on their strength. His voice too would change, becoming more and more distorted.
Civilian Appearance
Attractive guy 1,70 height, curly black hair, brown eyes and light skin. Chuck has a somewhat athletic build, due to him regularly working out. Tends to wear casual clothing, like some ordinary shorts and a t-shirt.
Mentality
Considerably smarter than his reputation Chuck is actually a decent and introverted person, easily frightened by people and unknown situations, he likes to pass his time with different hobbies, games, movies or research. In his civil persona he prefers to stay away from trouble and has a somewhat low self esteem.
This heavily changes once he enters his breaker state, especially if he splits into multiple versions of himself.
Copies are individually different to each other, mostly because Chuck would intentionally or unintentionally offload certain aspects of his personality into them. He could focus all of his anger and resentment into one and have the rest of him just be indifferent to his mortal enemy.
They tend to be chaotic, pure emotional ones in particular are leaned to cause mayhem, some emotions being more prone to cause problems then others. Though they are compelled to listen to each other and are able keep each other in check. Opposed to this, they would be almost impossible to control once separated.
In the past there were issues with copies stalking and bothering people he liked or disliked, but overtime he did learn to deal with those different facets of himself.
Despite all of this, Chuck wants to be a hero at his core, he yearns to be like those great people he looked up to.. to be like his dad and to get over his own problems. He wants to help everyone at the same time. No matter how small or great the deed would be. He could be the guy who helps someone over the street or one who sacrifices everything to protect those who can’t safe them self.
His urge to do too much at once is often also the major cause of his short comings. Him falling into the habit of delegating tasks to his copies to do more than he would otherwise be able to.
He is secretly bisexual and easily attracted to others, this becomes very obvious once a part of him starts to hit on fellow heroes or enemies..
Skills & Training
- Jack of all trades, master of none. Since his trigger he used his powers to multitask and follow different passions. causing him to expand his knowledge into different areas but also to suck at them all.
- Lock picking
- Material arts
- Pyrotechnic He does his best to learn new things and is easily hooked with a new hobby, but will almost always half-ass that too.
- Kickboxing
- He is exceptionally good at melee combat, using his power to split and confuse the enemy, often assembling himself just a moment prior to striking his opponent at full power.
- Hacking
- Refraction is able to shut out distracting thoughts, emotions, even memories, separating them via splitting himself. Simultaneously this would cause copies which are especially focused on those elements.
- Poker
- Death of an duplicate can cause temporary loss of certain memories, skills and emotions (Regenerating them, takes longer, than everything else).
Resources & Wealth
Slightly above average, makes some money here and there but also tends to waste it on various activities or gadgets. Lives in the wards commons, in lack of a place of his own.
Comics, Social Media Accounts & his own website, Sci-fi books & movies, video games
Equipment & Gear
- Taser gun
- Slingshot
- Smartphone
- First aid kit.
Parahuman Power
Trigger Type: Single natural Trigger, 2nd Gen parahuman - Thinker, Striker, Breaker(Mover/Master)
Chuck can enter a breaker form made out of bright, semi-translucent hard-light, like a warped version of his real body. The breaker can do two things. Beam, or Refract.
Beaming:
Transforming into a golden beam of light, capable of moving in a straight line extremely quickly, though quick reflexes could potentially dodge. Can’t change direction, & possesses no senses.
This beam can be intercepted by solid materials which cause them to forcefully materialize, though they can travel through conductive materials such as metal, reflective surfaces would be able to redirect them.
When re-materializing he maintains the momentum he possessed prior to transforming. Dematerialization and Rematerialization cause a bright flash of light as he transitions from one form to the other.
Refracting:
Chuck can split himself into multiple bodies (20 max), each of them only a fraction of his original. Able to split his mental capacity (IE Personality traits, memories, skills) among them as he sees fit.
Each clone may use the Beaming part of his power.
However it is when he splits his emotions (listed below) among these bodies that we get more tangible effects.
Bodies that possess the full emotional spectrum, or even parts of the emotional spectrum are more stable mentally, but are weaker than a baseline human (by about half) and have slightly lessened skill proficiency across the board, compared to his baseline.
Bodies with a singular emotion however possess double the strength of a baseline human, and has a slight increase in proficiency to skills that are applicable or thematically linked to the emotion they do possess. They are however much more unstable mentally.
Both in and out of the Breaker state, Chuck can amplify emotions that he currently possesses on touch (at will), though this power is increased by several orders of magnitude when performed by a single emotion clone.
Additionally Chuck can sense emotions of those within his line of sight, restricted in that he can only sense the emotions he currently possesses, with the sense getting finer the less emotions a copy has.
The moment one dies all of them feel it. Each duplicate killed, requires an hour outside of Breaker state to regen. IE a grenade kills 19 of them, every hour he regains the capacity to split once, until he reaches the 20 max cap.
Objects they hold, will multiply with them, however they too would dissipate into light once they break or the copy dies.
They are unable to de-materialize or split if they’re too close to another person (physical contact)) or physically bound to something bigger than themselves. Once separated, there is no true original with each and every clone being its own individual no matter what happens to the rest. Them capable to just fuse back into one or regenerate into the original if some of them died. If one copy gets damaged, its injury can carry over. A healthy one fused with an almost dead copy will be better off than the lethaly injured one but is still pretty fucked. So at one point Refraction will just be better off abandoning severely injured copies instead of letting them fuse and compromise healthy ones.

Background & Trigger
Chuck spent the first four years of his life with mom, though there isn’t much he remembers about that time, as she soon died because of drug abuse.
After this, his dad took him in, totally unprepared for the fact that Chuck was his son.
Life was good, despite the fact, that dad hardly spent any time with him. Causing him to crave for the slightest ounce of attention. Working his ass of at home or in school, he did not only his own homework but also those of his friends, managed the household so Dad would be proud, would have more time for him.
Chuck just couldn’t say no to anyone, if he got asked for a favor he couldn’t deny it, even if there was already so much he needed to do, he would manage. That’s what he always thought, but whatever he did, it wasn’t enough.
…
It was one of those days, at school, he felt tired barely able to stay awake, even the ‘meds’ didn’t help, nonetheless he has to stay focused, he can’t afford to miss anything. Objectively it wasn’t wise to stay awake all night, but there is just so much he needed to do. Even though he finished to group project all on his own, they were still all unhappy about it. He tried to listen, to the teacher in front, to his classmates behind.. their complains and suggestions. He just couldn’t decide if he wants to get away from everything or just get to work, to make up for it, to do everything better. Surrounded by people and yet all on his own.. He is stuck and sick to his stomach.
Suddenly, people were screaming, at each other, at him.. pointing towards the door, dragging him with them. Chuck finding himself in the midst of a panicking crowd, while he can hear the shooting in the distance. Still he just couldn’t fully comprehend it, that whole situation. Only realizing how its all wrong, that he isn’t where he needed to be, the next appointment.. his responsibilities. Fighting against the mass of people to get back and away, from everything he still needed.. has.. to do…
He finally got the means to get away and be everywhere at once.
+++Trigger+++
After some weeks of just being a chaotic mess free of all responsibilities, he faced off against the local Protectorate hero Starlight, only to discover who the man really is.
